The Content Framework for Small Business Owners Who Don't Know What to Post
Three viewers with the same problem: a Kenya safari operator, a skincare founder, and a travel agent / lifestyle concierge. All ask what to post when everyone in their field posts the same pictures.
> "You're not short of things to photograph. You're short of things to say."
The baseline problem
Everyone in your industry has the same images β "the lions, the hotel, the fancy skincare jars. That's the baseline. It's what I assumed I was getting before I clicked on you, based solely on your name."
Baseline content isn't worthless β it tells a buyer what sort of business you are. "But if your photographs look like a school trip, nobody gets very far, and they certainly don't get as far as your prices."
> What it cannot do is get you picked, because everybody else has the same stuff. > **"Information only helps a buyer if it separates you from the alternatives. That's what diagnosticity means."**
Where content actually comes from
- What you say to clients all day long β the questions you get every week, "the thing you always end up explaining because people get it wrong. That's a piece of content."
- When that dries up: the comment sections under other people's videos in your field. "What are people actually asking? Take those questions and answer them."
The test
> "Somebody who doesn't know your field has to be capable of getting it wrong."
So "we only work with the finest properties" doesn't count β "everybody says that, and nobody outside your industry is going to guess otherwise."
Worked examples
Safari. Everyone expects animals, lodges, the tent with a view β that's the baseline expectation. What's actually interesting: are there stopovers at local villages? Do I meet local tribespeople? Do I get to make something? Plus: most first-time visitors "haven't the faintest idea what they ought to be looking at." So β what a safari actually is, what to expect, how safaris protect wildlife, how important the safari business is to Kenya. > "There's a year of posts in that, and not one of them involves a picture of a lion."
Travel agent. Not go and see the Colosseum β "that's boring." The small things: why can't I order a cappuccino after 11:00? Why do Italians get upset if you cut spaghetti? "There's a post for every place you send people."
Lifestyle concierge. She's sitting on the mechanics of her own job, which nobody understands and everybody's curious about: How do I book a private jet? How do I charter a yacht β if it's Β£100k a week, what do I get? Does it dock somewhere? Do I fly in by helicopter? Who does she ring? How do you source a genuinely rare watch? > "It doesn't matter whether the person watching will ever do it. They're curious as to how it's done." She could "talk straight to camera with b-roll over it and never show a product at all."
Skincare. She worried about before-and-afters. Agreed β they're "all compromised," and at the top of the market that isn't what's being bought anyway. From working with global skincare brands: "it's never about the before and after. It's about confidence and feeling good." "It doesn't make you feel younger β feeling younger makes you more confident, and it's the confidence people are after." > "Leave the before-and-afters to the mid-market." Instead: show yourself making it, what's in it, how those ingredients work on the skin, how they interact, and what the difference actually is between yours and Clinique or La Mer or an off-the-shelf brand. > She said she wanted the product to stand behind the claim β "and that's how you do it. You do it by educating people."
The universal rule
> "It runs the same way everywhere the buyer is flying blind."
Even a builder: post about why you price a Victorian rear extension the way you do. "Nine times out of ten the existing footings aren't deep enough and we'll end up underpinning β so if your quote hasn't got a line for that, ask them what happens when they get down there."
